The Art of Layering: How to Layer Your Necklaces
Share
There’s something effortlessly put-together about a beautifully layered necklace look. The secret isn’t wearing more jewellery – it’s choosing pieces that work together.
Mixing different lengths, textures, chains and gemstones can completely change an outfit, whether you’re adding a little interest to a simple white shirt or bringing colour to your favourite autumn knit.
For our latest Green Edit, we’re layering rich green gemstones with warm gold, smooth snake chains and delicate double chains to create combinations that feel considered without being too perfect.
Here’s how to create your own.
A simple chain is one of the easiest places to begin.
Our Snake Chain Necklace creates a smooth line of gold around the neckline and provides the perfect foundation for adding more detailed pieces.
Because it has a completely different texture from a gemstone or pendant necklace, it adds interest without competing for attention.
Styling tip: Keep your shortest necklace relatively simple and allow the detail to build as your necklaces get longer.

Add a little colour
This is where the look starts to become your own.
Green gemstones bring beautiful natural variation into a layered look – from softer amazonite and African turquoise tones to richer African jade and green agate.
Rather than trying to match every shade perfectly, let the subtle differences work together. Natural stones are particularly beautiful for layering because variations in colour and markings give the finished look a more relaxed feel.
Play with different lengths
One of the most important parts of layering necklaces is giving each piece enough room to be seen.
Rather than placing several necklaces at almost exactly the same length, create a gentle cascade down the neckline.
Think:
Short: Snake chain
Middle: Green gemstone or pendant necklace
Longer: Double-chain or longer pendant style
The result feels much more intentional – and every necklace gets its moment.
Mix your textures
Don't be afraid to combine completely different styles of chain.
A smooth snake chain looks beautiful beside delicate links, gemstone beads, pearls or a more substantial chain.
In fact, mixing textures is often what stops layered jewellery from looking like you've simply put three necklaces on at once.
The contrast is what makes it interesting.
Let one necklace do the work
Layering doesn't necessarily mean choosing three separate necklaces.
A Double Chain Necklace gives you the layered effect instantly and makes a brilliant starting point if you're unsure where to begin.
Wear it alone for an effortless layered look, or add a shorter snake chain or gemstone necklace to create something more individual.
This is also a lovely way to take a layered look from daytime into evening without completely changing your jewellery.
Don't make it too perfect
Perhaps our favourite rule: there really aren't any rules.
Your necklaces don't have to match perfectly. Your gemstones don't need to be exactly the same shade. Gold chains can have different textures and weights.
The most interesting combinations often come from mixing pieces you wouldn't automatically put together.
Start with a favourite necklace and build around it.
The Green Edit
This season we're particularly drawn to green and gold.
Rich jade, soft amazonite, turquoise tones and deep green agate bring colour without overwhelming an outfit, while warm gold makes those natural shades really come alive.
Layer them over a simple cream knit, an open white shirt, a black top or even a favourite T-shirt and let the jewellery become the detail.
Find Your Layer
Whether you prefer a simple two-necklace combination or love building a fuller layered look, choose pieces that feel like you.
Start simple. Add colour. Mix your textures. Make it yours.
